Parabens
These are normally added as parabens preservative. Look for names like: ethylparaben, propylparaben, methylparaben, and butylparaben.
There is increasing evidence that parabens mimic hormones, disrupting your endocrine system and affecting everything from your metabolism, reproductive system and digestion.
Your body is very efficient at absorbing parabens, and the more frequently they are used, the higher the level of trace amounts in your body.
PHTHALATES
These chemicals are used in plastics to make them more flexible, durable and transparent. They are used in hundreds of products, from vinyl flooring, lubricating oils, solvents and yes, personal care products. In beauty products, phthalates are most often used to make mixtures less sticky and to bind fragrances. Sometimes they will be on labels hidden under the general term “fragrance”.
They are highly absorbable through your skin and are thought to disrupt normal hormone function. Researchers have even found some links to breast cancer and birth defects, among other endocrine-connected health problems.
FRAGRANCE
This term was created in order to protect the proprietary formulas of a company. Nowadays “fragrance” is a catch-all term that can include (and hide!) any number of more than 3,000 chemicals.
Nearly 35% of U.S. adults say they’ve experienced health problems when exposed to fragranced products. Little wonder when a great many of these chemical additives are known allergens, carcinogens and hormone disruptors… Does it really matter how good it smells if it’s toxic!?
PETROLEUM
It’s so common to find petroleum-derived chemicals in everyday products that it’s almost easy to forget petroleum is actually derived from crude oil used to make plastics and fuel, like gasoline and diesel!
“Mineral oil”, baby oil, Vaseline… are all derived from petroleum. In fact, they are by-products of refining this sticky, yellow-brown liquid into fuel. For context, by-products are often discarded as waste, but in this case we’ve been using the gunk left over from creating gasoline and diesel on our skin!
In the words of one expert, moisturizing products containing petroleum oils “can create the illusion of moisturized, hydrated skin, all the while suffocating your pores.”
Besides this, petroleum and petroleum-derived products like petrolatum are known to be carcinogenic. At best they create a water-repellent barrier. This can give the illusion of moisture while also trapping dirt and bacteria which can degrade skin and lead to both dryness and blemishes – both of which can accelerate signs of aging.
Caffeine
Caffeine in your skin cream? In some, yes. While there may be claims of antioxidant effects, in fact caffeine is most often added in order to aid absorption of other formula components. This can be a tremendous downside when the ingredients include toxic chemicals like those above, or other common ones like formaldehyde, phenoxyethanol, PFAS & PEGs, hydroquinone, benzophenone, alpha and beta hydroxy acids (lactic acid and glycolic acid) or sulfates…
But besides increasing absorption of known toxins, caffeine can age and dull your skin by increasing dryness, which leads to more visible signs of aging.
Silicones
Not to be confused with the natural element “silicon”, silicones are man-made polymers used in things like cake molds, adhesives, electrical items and cooking utensils!
In cosmetics, silicones help formulations spread easily and appear to give a silky finish but don’t be fooled… They are very cheap fillers that offer no benefit other than blocking pores and eventually contributing to pollution as they build up and create sludge in waterways. That should give you a clue – silicones are water-repellent, in a bad way. You see, they don’t break down easily – in fact some experts claim it may take hundreds of years for this to happen!
When it comes to skin, silicones may appear to offer temporary benefits when it comes to ‘filling’ the missing oils and fats daily life can strip from your skin… But again, don’t be fooled. Locking in toxins like the ones we’ve touched on above is NOT a benefit. Consider these a toxic filler and steer clear!
Glycols
Glycols are a kind of alcohol, but unlike most alcohols, they generally do not occur in nature. Typically glycols are used to produce goods such as polyester and antifreeze. Sadly, they can also be found in many common cosmetics and skincare products.
The levels of toxicity vary by type. For example ethylene glycol is considered highly toxic and isn’t “supposed” to be used in cosmetics. Reason being, this toxic ingredient has been connected to kidney damage, among other concerns. Propylene glycol has “low” toxicity, so it is permitted to be included in many skincare formulas.
Yes, that’s right – “low toxicity” chemicals that are used in antifreeze and to make plastics are “permitted” in products you put on your skin!
By now you must be wondering WHY ON EARTH any of these toxins would be put anywhere near your skin, let alone in products you put on your skin that get absorbed. Which brings us to…
